The road for many graduates leads to London. The road brought me here from the Midlands randomly. I found myself a random job, I found myself random accommodation and I even found myself a few random friends. That was five years ago and I am now a complete expert in my field of employment, South London is now my home and those friends are some of the best mates I’ve ever had.
And just as randomly, I found myself writing for the Eastern Eye newspaper, a UK published British Asian weekly. I became the proud owner of a column called ‘Planet DiStar’, with my name and picture on top, and it was very exciting! I wrote about Bollywood gossip or lifestyle issues or about what I had been up to about town, and I found myself practicing a talent I didn’t even know I had....Writing.
I show my creative side through my words, and I’m learning as I go along, but I’m certainly trying. Just like how I’m trying to become a super-fit, co-ordinated dancer by attending Bollywood dance classes once a week. I’m dancing for fun, but it’s nice to daydream I could drop it like I’m Aishwarya if I really wanted to. I’m also summoning up the courage to start rock climbing classes but the idea of showing people just how physically weak I am is putting me off.
Which is probably just an excuse as I’m usually not the shy type. I’ve travelled a fair bit. A lot of it has been with a wheelie suitcase packed full of party clothes and makeup, but this year I went backpacking. Meaning a rucksack full of loo roll and antibacterial gel. That was an eye-opening experience. First of all, I carried the rucksack by myself. But mostly, I realised that there are people in this world, millions of them probably, who have nothing yet want nothing more than family and religion to be happy.
I promise you, upon my return I didn’t switch my hair straightners on for weeks. Frizzy hair doesn’t compare to the villages I visited which barely get two hours a day of electricity.
But I digress; I’m here to create an online presence in blogging and article writing. The subjects I feel passionate about usually fall under the ‘lifestyle’ category of writing. Love and relationships, dating, being single in a big city full of other singles, family commitments, family restraints, friendship issues. I have my eye on fashion, but like most things to do with my personality, I don’t follow the trend. I love actions films and I love American TV drama shows just as much as I love the fluffy ones like Glee.
I’m a British-born Indian who has successfully balanced the traditions of the east with the cultures of western society. I hope to reflect this in my writing and I hope for it to translate across all colours and ages.
